What Should I Wear to Physical Therapy?

We want you to get the most out of your physical therapy!! Did you know that your clothing can affect the doctors ability to do a thorough evaluation and treatment? It can also affect your ability to perform needed exercises with comfort and proper positioning. So….We gathered the following tips from our doctors and patients to help you dress for success in physical therapy:

Proper Clothing

  • Wear something you can easily move around in. Here's a test: could you squat, do a plank or throw a ball without any problems?

  • Wear layers - you may heat up during your exercises and literally cool down when icing your injury.

If you have an upper body injury: Please make sure we can easily gain access to the area needing treatment. For example, if you are coming in for your shoulder, please wear a tank top or baggy t-shirt. It's not so easy for the therapist to work on you if you're wearing a fitted sweater. We do have medical gowns on hand if you need one.

If you have a lower body injury: Please make sure we can easily gain access to the area needing treatment. For example, if you are coming in for your knee, please wear shorts or a pair of pants that can be rolled up. Have you ever tried pushing skinny jeans up over someone's knee? We do have medical gowns and shorts on hand if you need them.

Proper Footwear

Please wear socks and sneakers.

And here are some things NOT TO WEAR:

  • Restrictive Clothing! Have you ever tried working out in jeans or a dress?

  • Flip-Flops, Slip-Ons or Unsupportive Shoes

  • Lotion - If you apply lotion directly before your appointment, it can reduce the traction that the therapist needs for your treatment

As you can see, what you wear to therapy affects a lot more than you think! To make it as easy as possible, we do have a changing area so you can easily come to therapy before or after work.
