Student Athlete Recovers from Soccer Injury at Physical Therapy

Each month, Iron Physical Therapy highlights a special patient to tell their inspiring story. Because we know recovery is more than just going to appointments, we want to honor people who go all in - body, mind and spirit. They show us what’s possible. That you can move on from a setback energized to do amazing things...to challenge your body, to chase your dreams, to address future pain in a healthy way, to #getbetterbebetter. This August, Ella is Iron Physical Therapy’s Patient of the Month from our Caldwell, NJ clinic! Ella is a middle school soccer player whose ankle injury has had her out of the game for awhile.

Ella is a student athlete who’s been working hard in physical therapy to get geared up for her return to soccer. She’s been patient beyond her years and has persevered through her recovery. She also loves the beach and is a really great baker!

What brought you into physical therapy?

I had a lot of ankle pain and my ankle was still very weak. I was excited to start physical therapy again because I really wanted to get back to soccer. And I really wanted to be out of pain.

What position do you play in soccer? What is your favorite part of the game?

I’m a defensive midfielder. My favorite part of soccer is the feeling right after you score a goal or stop the other team from scoring one.

How would you describe physical therapy to your teammates who don't know what it is?
I would describe physical therapy as a way to get back to normal life without being in pain.

What PT exercise or technique helped you feel your best?

The techniques that helped me the most were the Graston Technique and the Active Release Technique!

Any advice for others who are recovering from an injury like yours?

I would tell anyone recovering from an injury not to give up. Also, trust your physical therapist because they do all that they can to help you get better. I have learned to trust myself and to listen to my body.

How does it feel to be gearing up for soccer season for the first time in a long time?

Putting on my soccer gear feels a little nerve-racking because I don't want to get hurt again, but I know I'm a lot stronger than I was before. From PT, I have learned to push myself to do my best but listen to my body.

What accomplishment in PT are you most proud of?

I am most proud of being able to finally run and kick a soccer ball again.
