Each month, Iron Physical Therapy highlights a special patient to tell their inspiring story. We want to honor the people who go all in - body, mind and spirit. They show us what’s possible - that you can move on from a setback to do amazing things...to challenge your body, to chase your dreams, to address pain in a healthy way to #getbetterbebetter. Meet Jeff! He suffered from back pain so bad he was reduced to limping and required help with basic daily activities like driving. Despite such a challenging and painful start, Jeff remained committed to the rehab process with perfect attendance during his plan of care.

He implemented every suggestion provided in therapy from ergonomic recommendations (new office chair and footwear) to various homework exercises throughout his journey. Jeff's hard work led to his amazing transformation into someone who looks forward to our weight training sessions together, daily walks and swimming at his new gym!

-Dr. Geno Mayes, DPT

In Jeff’s Own Words…

1) List Three Words to Describe You:

OCD, OCD, OCD
Just kidding. I would say:

OCD, logical, workaholic

2)  What Brought You Into Physical Therapy?

I went to physical therapy for excruciating nerve pain in my right leg from sciatica.

3) How would you describe physical therapy?

Rather than giving them an incorrect formal definition of Physical Therapy, I would tell them about my great experience. Then I would tell them that Iron PT could help them with their issue.

4)  What exercise or technique helped you most?

Dr. Mayes used different techniques at different points in my treatment, which I read about on Iron’s website. They each helped with specific issues.

When I first started, I believe it was ART (Active Release Technique) that Dr. Mayes used to reduce the unbelievable pain I was experiencing. I appreciated that immensely!

5)  What would you say to someone who is living in pain and putting off physical therapy?

Go to the “About” section on the Iron Physical Therapy website - It is all true!! Iron PT is very dedicated to helping their patients. Dr. Mayes asks me at every session about what I’m experiencing and then addresses any issues.

6) What are you excited to get back to after physical therapy?

Walking! I couldn’t get out of bed without intense pain before. Now I can walk a few miles. I would like to get back to hiking too.

6) What did you enjoy most about the physical therapy experience?

Though I was in pain, I found it enjoyable interacting with Dr. Mayes and his staff. They’re all very nice, interesting and caring people.
